Do I Have a Possum in my Attic? 

1.        You hear a little scrathcing or footsteps up in your attic.  You are sure something is there, but you haven't been able to see it.  As you investigate your attic, you find poop similar to that of a cat.  Could that be what it is?  Is there a stray cat in my attic?  Probably not.  It is most likely a possum.  

       Possums like to investigate and find any small hole that gives them entry into your house.  This is typically found where angles meet or under flashing.  They want shelter from the elements.  Once they get in your attic, it can be a nightmare.  
        Possums cause quite a foul smell, especially with their droppings.  They use your insulation as their own personal litter box.  They bring in fleas and ticks.  They urinate and cause damage to dry wall.  And that's if they are nice.  
       Some will scratch the drywall, continue to make a mess of your nicely places insulation, and if they get trapped up there, they will stop at nothing to get out.  What do you do?  
       Of course, we suggest calling us!  We will get rid of your rodent problem and ensure they don't return.  What do you do in the mean time?  One thing you can do is learn when your visitor comes and goes.  If you can accurately predict when the possum leaves and are sure there are no babies left behind, you can then do some repair work to block the hole that this little critter uses as an entrance.  
      Finding the entrance is generally easy.  The possum will most likely have some leaves, bean pods, or some other foliage leading into the hole that he used to make his bed.  Look for any opening where the angles meet on your roof.  Once you find the entry point or points, get them sealed.  If they can't find their way back in, you have at least succeeded in getting them out of your attic.  
       They will still be roaming around your home or business, but they will try to find different shelter.  However, that Possum will have babies and could create a problem outside the property as well.

Trapping Rodents

       Trapping a possum can be a challenge.  If you use a trap like the one in the picture, it can be an environmentally friendly way to get rid of the pest.  Simply set the trap where the Possum travels.  In the path of his entrance or even on certain roof tops where they jump from the fence onto the house.  Bait it with citrus fruit, peanut butter, or another natural food that is sweet. With some luck, you may catch that critter on the same day.
